Mrs. J. Orsman
Teaching Assistant
Welcome to Year 1! The class teacher in Year 1 is Miss Kenny and Mrs Orsman is the Year 1 teaching assistant.
The Year 1 curriculum builds upon and extends the experiences that children have had in Reception. Learning through play will continue to be an important part of the school day, and the children will gradually be eased into more formal learning as the year goes on so that they remain motivated, enthused and eager learners.
In Year 1, the teaching and learning is linked to the schools aims and values. The curriculum aims to allow children to develop their independent learning skills throughout the year. At the start of the year the classroom environment is set up in a similar way to Reception with different areas (writing, creative, small world, construction, reading, role play). We focus on developing reading for pleasure and there are a range of books in our classroom to allow your child to have a breadth of reading materials.
Our P.E sessions take place on a Thursday afternoon and some children take part in yoga sessions on Monday afternoons.
In Year 1 a phonics screening check is taken individually by all children in Year 1 in England. It is designed to give teachers and parents information on how your child is progressing in phonics. It will help to identify whether your child needs additional support at this stage so that they do not fall behind in this vital early reading skill. There are two sections in this 40-word check and it assesses phonics skills and knowledge learned through Reception and Year 1. Your child will read up to four words per page and it will only take around 5-10 minutes.
