Welcome to Year 1!

The class teacher in Year 1 is Mrs Mason.  Mrs Cluskey and Mrs Hamilton are the Year 1 teaching assistant.
The Year 1 curriculum builds upon and extends the experiences that children have had in Reception. Learning through play will continue to be an important part of the school day, and the children will gradually be eased into more formal learning as the year goes on so that they remain motivated, enthused and eager learners.
In Year 1, the teaching and learning is linked to the schools aims and values. The curriculum aims to allow children to develop their independent learning skills throughout the year. Children will work with support and independently. They will have opportunities to ‘choose’ in the resources area, developing their learning through play. We focus on developing reading for pleasure and there are a range of books in our classroom to allow your child to have a breadth of reading materials.
Our P.E session will take place on a Monday afternoon.
In Year 1 a phonics screening check is taken individually by all children in Year 1 in England. It is designed to give teachers and parents information on how your child is progressing in phonics. It will help to identify whether your child needs additional support at this stage so that they do not fall behind in this vital early reading skill. This will take place in May/June.
Reading books are changed on a Friday and we encourage children to read every night (just a few pages). Your child will also have access to ebooks linked to our reading scheme.
Spellings will also be sent home and the yearly spelling overview is shown below.

Ways to help your child throughout Year 1:

• Read a few pages of their reading book every night.
• Talk to your child about what you have read.
• Work with your child to help them learn the weekly spellings.
• Count with your child – count steps, stairs, cars and sing counting songs.
• Learn their number bonds to 10 – 1+9=10, 2+8=10
