RE Governor visit to Year 6 Eucharist Services, 9-2-2023
Background to the visit
Following a series of lessons about the Eucharist, two groups of pupils designed, prepared and
delivered their own Eucharist services to younger classes within the school.
Eucharist Service in Year 1
- Year 1 children sat in a semi-circle facing the table which the Year 6 pupils set up.
The bread and ‘wine’ was placed on the table which represented an altar. - The service included a reading, prayers, the Lord’s Prayer and the offer of bread and wine to
the Year 1 children and the adults in the room. - The Year 6 pupils included a simple re-telling and acting of the story of Hansel and Gretel,
which matched the theme of their service. - What particularly impressed me was the choice of song – ‘You’ve got a friend in me,’ which
was entirely appropriate for the age of the children and linked to the theme. - The Year 1 children remained engaged throughout and could talk about the part they enjoyed
most afterwards.
Eucharist Service in Year 4 - Year 4 children sat in a semi-circle.
- The Year 6 pupils chose to utilise the school lectern and had this in place prior to starting their
service. - The service included a reading which was enhanced by acting it out. It also included the Lords’
Prayer, sharing the peace with each child and adult in the room as well as the distribution of
the bread and ‘wine’. - Particularly impressive were the interactive prayers, which encouraged the Year 4 pupils to
really think and be engaged in a meaningful way. - The service ended with the song ‘Our God is a great big God’.
- Year 4 pupils were given the opportunity to ask questions after the service. The Year 6 pupils
were able to give answers very confidently.
Thank you to the Year 6 pupils for including me in their services. It was a privilege to take part.
